Mr. Sumiyama Donated Young Plant of Cherry Tree.

Mr. Sumiyama has donated 2 young plants of cherry trees to Bergen County, NJ where his son used to live. The trees are now planted at the 9.11 Monument Park of Overpeck, NJ. We visited the park today (Nov.30) with Mr.& Mrs. Dan and confirmed that the trees are planted near the 9.11 monuments in the park with the name plate of his lost son. It is surprising that we saw some small flowers on the branches of one of the 2 trees despite such a cold weather.

住山さんが桜の木を２本、ご子息が生前住んでいたNJのバーゲンに寄贈されました。今日私たちは旦夫妻と共にバーゲン郡のモニュメント・パークを訪れ、モニュメントの近くに植えられているのを確認してきました。不思議なことにこの寒さにも拘らず１本の木には小さな花がいくつも咲いていました。改めてご冥福をお祈りいたします。

Mr. Sumiyama's Requiem Will Be Performed.

A requiem composed by Mr. Sumiyama, a father of one of the 9.11 Japanese victims, will be performed for the first time at the 2nd Circle Wind Memorial Concert on Sep. 11, 2009. This song was originally composed for mixed choir, but has recently been arranged as a duo for violin and piano. It will be performed by Ms. Eiko Hosoi, a violinist and Ms. Mari Sumiyama, Mr. Sumiyama's wife. Mr. Sumiyama mentioned that it should be the ultimate memorial for their son if his requiem was actually performed at the concert by the victim's mother and her friend.

住山さんとの出会いを書き始めると長くなってしまいます。今は9.11テロ事件のご遺族の一人で私の大学の大先輩とだけ申し上げておきましょう。そして音楽とくに合唱を愛するという共通点でも結ばれているということ。
コンサートの翌々日、NJ州バーゲン郡の9.11のモニュメントに住山さんご夫妻をお連れした時の写真です。バーゲン郡では200人近い方が亡くなりました。日本人が４人。住山さんのご子息もそのお一人です。ここオーバーペック公園には子供たちが小さい頃私どもは家族でよく遊びに来ていました。そこにこんな立派なモニュメントが建てられていたこと、恥ずかしい話ですがこの日まで知りませんでした。石碑にはバーゲン郡の犠牲者全員の名前が刻まれています。フロアーとなっているレンガにも犠牲者の名前が刻まれたものがありました。澄み切った青空の秋晴れの午後のひと時をご夫妻とマッタリとした時間を過ごすことができました。とりとめのない話をする中で何か心が洗われているような不思議な気持ちになりました。高田三郎の合唱曲の傑作「風が」の中の“人は見えない時間に包まれている、、、”というメロディーが何度も私の頭の中をよぎっていきました。
